What makes Prepwell different to 1-to-1 tuition?Though the traditional model of 1-to-1 tuition has worked well for a very long time, we recognise that it simply does not suit most children. Children are social by nature and interactions with other children, whilst learning similar things, can be hugely beneficial. Here at Prepwell, we work in small groups. Our face-to-face session introduces all of the new content/learning for the week and our students are encouraged to consolidate that information through a series of home-learning activities. We recognise that preparing for these tests takes more than simply sitting down with a tutor for an hour a week. The best preparation is done through a combination of teaching and consolidation and our program perfectly manages that process.
-
How long will the program last? Our program is 1 year long. We begin our sessions in September and work through until the following August. Whilst there are a number of break weeks planned into the year (for example at Christmas and Easter and Summer), we have 44 weeks of regular weekly sessions. We will also provide planned intensive events both at Easter and in the Summer Holidays. For more information about those, please don't hesitate to speak with Josh.
-
It's gone past September, can my child still join?Yes! The nature of the Prepwell program is that we are constantly revisiting previous concepts in order to consolidate them. This means that we can definitely accommodate children who begin their preparation slightly later. If we feel that there isn't enough time for your child to get enough out of the program, then we will always be very transparent about that.
-
Does my child have to be in year 5 to complete this program?Currently, as our program is one year in length, and is built using concepts taken from year 5 and 6 of the national curriculum, we are only able to accept children who are in year 5. If your child is younger (year 4) and you believe them to be capable of working at this level and wish to begin their preparation early, please do get in touch and we can certainly assess this on a case-by-case basis.
-
Can you guarantee my child will pass the 11+?Short answer - no! The 11+ tests are very difficult by design and are challenging for the vast majority of children. There is simply no way of guaranteeing that any child will pass, even taking into consideration a good preparation. What we can guarantee though is that we will give your child the very best chance possible to pass. We do this by ensuring that they are comprehensively exposed to all aspects of the test and that they are given ample and regular opportunities to practise those concepts.
-
What is your pass rate?Having been involved with the preparation of in excess of one-hundred children for the test, it is impossible to say exactly what percentage of these passed. However what can be said with confidence is that many did pass and that all children were prepared to the very best of their ability.
-
What do you mean by immersive content? For many children, the format and style of the 11+ test is completely foreign. The questions asked and the concepts covered are unlike anything they have encountered at school. In order to address this, one of the fundamental principals of the Prepwell program is that all content is presented from day one, in a style and format reminiscent of the test. In this way, we can ensure that all children will develop a familiarity with these question types, which inevitably leads to less anxiety and a higher chance of successful completion. We call this aspect of the program 'Immersive Content', because just as when learning a new language, the greatest progress takes place when you are surrounded by it.
-
How much does it cost? Our sessions not only include the cost of the 90 minute face-to-face sessions, but the comprehensive program of home-learning that is offered to all children in addition. Our rates are competitively priced and reflect the rates of many local tutors and tuition companies. Please don't hesitate to call for more information.
-
How long does each session last? Our face-to-face sessions are 90 minutes long and are attended by your child once a week. In addition to this, we provide daily activities to be completed at home, which require approximately 15-20 minutes per day.
-
How is a session structured? Each week, our sessions are built around what we call the 'Four Big Ideas'. In each session your child will be taught a new concept from each of the four areas of the test (Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal/Spatial reasoning). The home-learning activities that follow in a week, are designed to not only consolidate all four of those concepts, but to revisit prior learning in order to embed those further.
-
How much 'homework' will my child get?Following the face-to-face session each week, the children will receive a daily activity designed to further consolidate their understanding. Each of the activities is designed to take approximately 15-20 minutes and a new activity will be available each day. Throughout the course of a week, this equates to approximately 2 hours or added learning time.
-
Does my child have to complete the home-learning activities each day?We certainly recognise how busy life is for many families. Though it is not strictly required of a child to complete the daily activity each day, we highly recommend that they complete as many of these throughout the week as is possible. Daily activities can also be completed on subsequent days, meaning that they can be done at a later date, however the best results come when these become a daily habit. The more time spent practising concepts, the better chance your child has at passing the test.
-
How many children will be in each session? Our sessions are strictly limited to a maximum of 8 children. Many sessions will have fewer children than this.
-
How does my child receive the home-learning tasks?Upon enrolment, your child will be entered into our Google Classroom LMS. This means they will be provided with an email address and a login to access the classroom. Within the virtual classroom, they will be able to read and respond to messages from the teacher, communicate with other children through the class forum, access their daily learning activities and receive feedback on their tasks. During our face-to-face sessions, all children will be given a Chromebook to use for that session- meaning they will be able to complete activities and receive feedback in this manner also.
